SUBJECT: Important Notice Regarding Team Travel to the United States
Dear KMHA Families,
Further to the discussion at the Town Hall in April, to the new Board’s first meeting this past week and as part of our commitment to keeping our players, families, and volunteers informed and safe, we are sharing important guidance regarding team travel to the United States and participation in activities with U.S.-based teams.
Participation with U.S.-Based Teams
KMHA teams must receive prior approval from Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) for any activities involving non-HEO or non-Hockey Canada teams. These teams must be properly registered and sanctioned by their governing bodies. Participation in any non-sanctioned activities is not covered by Hockey Canada insurance and is not officially supported by KMHA or HEO.
Considerations for Travel to the United States
As reported in the media, the relationship between Canada and the United States continues to evolve. While KMHA is not currently restricting participation in activities with U.S.-based teams—either here in Canada or in the U.S.—we do advise that this could change on short notice. Teams must carefully manage financial, travel, and logistical plans with this uncertainty in mind.
In addition, it is important to recognize that not all families may feel comfortable travelling to the United States at this time for personal, financial, or other reasons. We strongly encourage teams to consult with all families before committing to cross-border travel, ensuring that every voice is heard and considered in the decision-making process.
Additional Considerations Include:
• Approval Requirements: KMHA teams may only participate in sanctioned activities approved by HEO and Hockey Canada.
• Financial Risks: Fluctuations in currency exchange rates and non-refundable travel costs.
• Border Crossing & Documentation: Ensure all players and families have the necessary documentation and are aware of any border policies.
• Safety and Inclusion Concerns: Teams should be aware of the varying state-level laws and positions in the U.S. that may impact participants, particularly regarding gender, 2SLGBTQI+ rights, and personal privacy.
• Electronic Devices & Social Media: Travelers should consider potential issues related to device searches or social media activity at the border.
• Regional Differences: Be aware that laws and policies can differ significantly between U.S. states.
