The Kanata Chiefs Midget A team played in the Millbrook Midwinter Classic tournament from February 23-25 and stunned everyone – themselves included – with five undefeated games culminating in the tournament championship!
“We have struggled all season and didn’t go into the tournament with very high expectations,” said Head Coach Sean McCabe. “But something happened. I can’t explain it, but it was amazing to watch and be a part of.”
The team also faced their share of adversity during the tournament – playing just one of the five games with their full roster of 13. Freezing rain, and a bad accident on the 401 prevented two players, the Coach and an Assistant Coach from making it to the first game – and the team’s top goal scorer and one of their key defensemen were both out after the second game due to controversial suspensions. “We certainly had our share of bad luck but we were able to regroup and find a way to win,” said McCabe. “I’m extremely proud of everyone on this team – they were certainly the Cinderella story of the tournament – and they did KMHA proud.”
